Whitebait Delivery

On Friday, our 25 whitebait were delivered.
Here are a couple of pictures to show them become new members of Room 11!!
Kirsty for Whaka Inanga talked us through the process of the catching of the whitebait and how they have been looked after in a lab for a while.

We have been given a couple of links about our local rivers.  Our rivers are so polluted at the moment that it is affecting the whitebait populations, hence the focus on protecting our whitebait and researching their habits etc in more detail.

TERM 4

Well - we are back and it has started off in a really busy way - therefore delay in first post!!!
In the first couple of weeks we have already had two sessions on healthy eating, a visit to the supermarket, recording for the rugby game, athletics training and a deliver of whitebait - PHEW!

This term we will be looking at "Our Precious Jewel".
Room 11's take on this will be - our bodies are precious, how can we look after them, followed by our local environment - how can we sustain it and help ourselves too??
For writing we will be looking at persuasive writing, maths will be fractions and decimals followed by algebra.
Then we have conferences etc and Christmas to look forward too!

UNION MEETING

Please remember that teachers will be leaving school at 1.00pm on WEDNESDAY 7th SEPTEMBER for a paid union meeting.
There will be no classes for that afternoon.  Please ensure children are picked up by 1.00pm.

Room 11 Visitors

This morning, we had some special visitors into class.
Along came Rob Thompson, Siate Tokolahi and Jed Brown from the Canterbury Rugby Team.
They brought along some Weetbix, fruit salad and bananas.
Firstly, they talked to the class about how important good nutrition is.  They shared with us what they eat for brekkie!!  Then they answered some questions.  Lastly they shared some breakfast with us.
The winners were:
Logan ate 8 Weetbix
Olivia, Trinity and Fenella ate 5 Weetbix!!!
We were very lucky to have these visitors and hopefully the children have a better understanding of the importance of good nutrition!!

Olympic Ambassador

Today, we were lucky enough to have Nicola Coles, an Olympic Ambassador visit our school to talk to the children about her Olympic journey.
Nicola gave us some information on the history of the Olympic Games, her journey as a rower and how she achieved her Olympic dream.

Maybe you could ask your child:

• Where did the Olympics start?
• How do they light the flame?
• What did the ancient Olympians wear to compete?
• What are colour are the rings on the Olympic flag?
• What do they represent?
• How did Nicola Coles get into the Olympics?

Lit Quiz

Last week, on Thursday, the Opawa School Lit. Quiz teams took part in the Lit. Quiz Competition.
There were over 20 teams competing at the event and the two teams from our school came 8th and 14th - what a fantastic effort from everyone involved.
Room 11 had two members in the team.
Here they are with their certificates - Well done girls!!!

Paid Union Meeting

Just a reminder that Opawa School staff will be attending a paid union meeting on the afternoon of Wednesday September 7th.  Children will need to be collected by 12.30pm.

Week 4

Well, swimming is now over - it has been a full on, tiring couple of weeks, but I am sure the children have all learnt something new with regards to their swimming.
The last couple of days focussed on water safety - this involved getting used to a life jacket, kicking on your back in a life jacket and boat safety.

TERM 3

WELCOME BACK TO EVERYONE!
I hope everyone had a lovely relaxed holiday!!
A couple of notes for this term:

• Swimming starts on Monday 1st August.  Children will be swimming every day for the two week block of swimming lessons.
• Knowledge-a-thon - this will be taking place in Week 2 or 3, keep on practicing those questions!  Please remember to return the forms and bags - EVEN IF NO MONEY RAISED.  There may be a prize for first class with all forms returned - that will be us!!! 

Experiments

This week we looked at how to make 'snot'!!
We added a compound to water to see what would happen.  We had to pour the mixture from glass to glass to get it to thicken up - it did look like snot though!!!

Birthdays

We have had 3 birthdays in June.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to:
Saracen, Enrico and Rhiannon.
We were very spoilt by Rhiannon's mum Sam, who brought in a delicious birthday cake for us to share - yummy!!  And very clever!

Speed writing

We did an activity to help us along with our writing of explanations.
We had a whiteboard, a pen and 10 minutes to write as much as we could to explain how we brush our teeth!

Fenella's Win!

Congratulations to Fenella, who not only competed in the Christchurch Airports Kds Mara Fun, but won the race.  It was 2km long and she won a banner, a finishers medal and a brand new pair of shoes.
